Mold vs. Mildew
If you've ever spotted a dark patch on your bathroom grout or a white powdery coating on a windowsill and wondered, "Is that mold or mildew?" — you're not alone. These two terms get used interchangeably all the time. While both are fungi that thrive in damp areas, they're actually very different, and understanding the distinction can save you a lot of stress (and money).
What Is Mildew?
Mildew is simply a specific subclass of mold defined by its growth habit. It is a surface-level fungal growth. It tends to be flat, powdery, and gray or white in color. You'll most commonly find it on damp surfaces like shower tiles, window frames, or fabrics left in humid conditions. The good news: mildew is generally easier to address and doesn't penetrate the surface it's growing on. A good cleaning product and some ventilation improvements usually take care of it.
What Is Mold?
Mold is a different story. It's a broader category of fungus that can appear in many colors — green, black, orange, white, or brown — and it typically has a fuzzy or slimy texture. More importantly, mold grows into the material it's colonizing, not just on top of it. That means it can spread through drywall, wood, insulation, and other porous materials in ways that surface cleaning simply won't fix.
Why Does It Matter?
The reason this distinction matters so much is that the response is completely different. Mildew can often be handled with a scrub brush and better airflow. Mold, depending on the extent and location, may require professional assessment, containment, and remediation. Treating a mold problem like mildew — wiping it down and moving on — often results in the problem continuing to grow behind the scenes.
Some molds also produce mycotoxins, which are chemical compounds that can cause respiratory issues, skin irritation, and other health concerns with prolonged exposure. Mildew doesn't carry the same level of health risk.
When In Doubt, Test It
If you're not sure what you're dealing with, that's where professional assessment comes in. At Greenline Mold Solutions, we take the guesswork out of the equation entirely. Rather than making assumptions based on appearance alone, we use air sampling and surface testing to identify exactly what's present in your home — and give you a clear picture of what needs to happen next.
Bottom line: mildew is a nuisance, mold is a concern. Knowing which one you're dealing with is the first step to addressing it correctly.
